The NOW Lab Opens

Makerspaces are popping up everywhere these days including Sudbury, where the stunning Sara Sherman NOW Lab just opened at the Goodnow Library.  

Sometimes called “hackerspaces,’ or “fablabs,” makerspaces are community centers that provide individuals with tools, resources and supplies they couldn’t access on their own for the purpose of exploration and creative expression.

At Goodnow, the NOW Lab is a newly renovated space on the second floor that features glass walls and a striking design. It is outfitted with an array of cool, cutting edge technology (including a 3-D printer, a laser cutter and a large format color printer) as well as traditional art supplies and craft materials. What makes the NOW Lab unique is that it is a dedicated space open to all, not just teens. Drop by and you’ll find kids and adults of all ages “tinkering” side by side, testing new skills, building elaborate structures and exploring innovative ideas.

A Sudbury Foundation grant helped to purchase some of the big ticket equipment as well as a variety of tools and supplies to get the lab off the ground.

Library staff have exciting plans for the space including programming around science, technology, engineering, music, sewing, cooking and more. It's definitely worth a visit.
