Oct. is Disability Awareness Month

October is National Disability Awareness Month and Sudbury's rejuvenated Commission on Disability (COD) is working hard to shine a light on the issues impacting people with physical and intellectual disabilities.

This month, to call attention to the cause, they are distributing lapel pins that depict the disability flag.

The flag was designed in 2017 by Eros Recio, of Valencia, Spain. He is a professional ballet dancer, the only one in the world with Down Syndrome.

The three colors of the  flag -- gold, silver and bronze -- are inspired by the medals that can be won at the Paralympic Games. The flag has been accepted by the United Nations as a symbol of all people with disabilities. Mr. Recio asked that it be considered the "Flag of Overcoming" because the word “disability” can be socially segregating.

The COD is donating the pins to members of boards, committees and departments in Town as a symbol of inclusion, solidarity, and freedom. The Sudbury Historical Society will be selling the pins at the History Center and Museum.
