Teaching Teens to be Philanthropists

This fall, the Foundation for MetroWest (FFMW) will host its popular community-based Youth Action Council (YAC) in Sudbury.

The hands-on grantmaking program walks teens through all the steps a Foundation follows before making a grant to a nonprofit.

Teens learn about the needs of their local community, about how nonprofits operate, how to evaluate grant proposals, and how to work with others to make a difference. The group participates in a few community service days at local nonprofits, and is responsible for raising $1,000 of the $10,000 grant-making budget.

After training, students evaluate requests for grants that support local programs serving children and youth. They visit organizations applying for funding and then decide which ones to fund. After choosing grant recipients, the teens present their decisions to the FFMW’s Distribution Committee, and end the process with a grant ceremony where they present the grants to the organizations.

The program runs from October 2012 through May 2013 and will be held on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm at The Grange Hall, 326 Concord Road, Sudbury, MA.

To participate, teens must submit an application (including a brief essay and a letter of recommendation) and take part in an interview.

YIP Application 2012-13 are being accepted now.

Teens interested in taking advantage of this great opportunity should contact Jennifer Ubaldino atmailto:jubaldino@foundationformetrowest.org. The original Natick-based YAC will continue this year as well.

The 2012-13 Sudbury YAC program is funded by The Sudbury Foundation.
