Food Rescue in MetroWest

January 14, 2019

The Sudbury Foundation, in partnership with the MetroWest Health Foundation, Middlesex Savings Bank Charitable Foundation, and the Foundation for MetroWest, has approved a three-year continuation grant of $362,500 to  Lovin’ Spoonfuls, the Boston-based food rescue agency. The grant will enable Lovin’ Spoonfuls to continue their work “rescuing” fresh fruits and vegetables from grocery stores, farmers markets and farms, and delivering the items to MetroWest area food pantries and shelters.

The same funding collaborative provided seed money to pilot Lovin’ Spoonfuls’ MetroWest route in 2016.

Working with 30 companies and organizations in 10 Metrowest communities, Lovin’ Spoonfuls is distributing an average of 40,000 pounds of fresh food each month to 23 local nonprofits, all at no charge to the nonprofits. The impact has been strong. Not only is the food not wasted, which costs money in disposal and has negative environmental impacts, but it helps provide nutritious options for those using food pantries and living in shelters.

The new funding will support Lovin’ Spoonfuls Metrowest operating costs including maintenance of a refrigerated truck and the salary for a driver dedicated to MetroWest.

Learn more about Lovin’ Spoonfuls’ great work from the perspective of MetroWest Food Rescue Coordinator Anthony Summa here.
